Monarch Mondays: The Past, Present and Future of An All-American Sneaker

Every so often, a special sneaker is introduced to the market. Maybe it’s an iconic design. Maybe it features a brand new, industry-shifting technology. Maybe it’s a shoe that becomes intertwined with a legendary moment in cultural history. Or maybe it’s just a shoe that’s brilliant in its simplicity and speaks to the common man.

The Air Monarch is just that: a brilliantly simple sneaker. It’s never been at the forefront of culture. It doesn’t fetch crazy prices on the resell market. Nobody can tell you about the time they remember (insert influencer here) wearing their pair while doing something that became iconic. But it is among Nike’s best-selling and most important models because it’s accessible, available in a variety of widths and colorways, and most importantly … it’s so damn normal.  read more

Noah S/S ’18 Looks Amazing

We love Noah here at KicksOneTwo.

The New York-based brand founded by former Supreme creative director Brendon Babenzien offers everything you could ask for: a refined and consistent aesthetic inspired by the sea, music, and New York’s culture (we spot cues from Babenzien’s time Supreme and 90’s Polo in the designs as well), tasteful collaborations that are meaningful both to the people behind the brand and their core audience (The Cure, Dover Street Market), excellent quality (you can check out an extensive archive of all their fabrics here) and a great deal of transparency behind how the products are made and why the price points are what they are (Babnzien once penned an in-depth article explaining exactly why their Two-Tone Parka cost $448). read more

“Fashions come and go, style is all day.”

Wise words. You can spend your whole life chasing fashion, or you can let your personal style come to you. There’s bound to be a period of trial and error, but once you get through it you’ll establish your own signature look. Establishing that signature look is what Proper Gang, the label we’re shining a spotlight on in this edition of Behind The Brand is all about. The quote? Jeremy Scott and Adidas: A Whimsical Collaborative History

8 Trends That Will Make A Mark In 2018

Streetwear has become an increasingly trend-driven industry over the past few years. Thanks to the limitless reach and voracious appetite for consumption of the Internet, there’s always something new that you need to know about and add to your wardrobe, and with a new year comes a fresh new batch of trends. Some of these trends have staying power beyond their initial hype, carving out a permanent place in the culture. Most fade away into near-nothingness, reduced to cheap imitations of their former selves occupying space on the racks of fast-fashion mall retailers. No matter if you love trends or hate them, they’ll always be a part of the game, and it’s up to you to decide which ones merit sticking around. read more

Behind The Brand: Awake NY

“Awake” is a powerful word in street culture. Being awake doesn’t simply mean not being asleep. If you’re awake, you possess a heightened sense of awareness that enables you to think, conceptualize, and create in a way that the average person who’s not “awake” simply cannot.

And in the case of New York-based Awake NY, a brand that’s poised to be one of the biggest successes of 2018 … it’s safe to say that they occupy the aforementioned “heightened state”. But to truly understand what the brand’s all about, you first have to understand its founder’s creative work and credentials. read more

The Importance Of The Graphic Tee, A True Streetwear Staple

Streetwear is an industry in a perpetual state of flux. Trends come and go, tastes evolve and change, and in the last few years the Internet has made what was once a subculture tucked away from the mainstream and only accessible to those “in the know”  available to anyone anywhere in the world with an internet connection and a thirst for knowledge.

However, one thing that’s never lost its place in streetwear is the graphic tee. It’s been integral to the culture since the very first day “streetwear” became a thing (there’s no true answer to when streetwear started – 10 people would likely tell you 10 different origin stories), and still reigns supreme (no pun intended) today. read more

Early November in Minnesota is always chilly, but this year it’s a little different. The temperature has already dipped into the low 30’s, it snowed in October (granted, the snowfall didn’t have the magnitude of the 1991 blizzard, but it still happened), and fall is effectively over. Skepta: a name you’ve likely heard before. Gucci’s Classic Logo Tee And Hoodie Are Available Now … If You Can Afford Them

Gucci: A brand that’s enjoyed a terrific resurgence in 2016. After several years of ho-hum releases and what seemed to be a lack of inspired products, Alessandro Michele took the helm and turned both the high-fashion world and the streetwear world on their heads with his loud, over-the-top (in a good way) designs and embroidery on everything. Gucci has got all the juice right now, and they don’t show any signs of stopping any time soon.

Artist Merch: A Wave That Cannot Be Stopped

kanye-west-yeezy-3-life-of-pablo-event-2016-billboard-650

Tour merch used to not be a big deal. You’d go see an artist you liked in concert, and you might just buy yourself a t-shirt from their merch stand if you liked them enough. Maybe if you were a really big fan, you’d head over to their website and grab yourself some merch on there. It wasn’t really a fashion statement of any sort, you’d just wear it because you liked the artist.

Oh, how things have changed. Starting with Kanye’s “Yeezus” tour merch, the demand for artist goods has increased tenfold. Tour merch is limited. It resells for high prices. It sells out right away, and is not easy to get anymore. Justin Bieber’s “Purpose Tour” merch was designed by Jerry Lorenzo and had a pop-up at VFILES. Travis Scott just announced his new merch line will consist of 60 (that’s right, 60) pieces. Kanye’s Pablo line has been so successful that people line up for hours to buy it at pop-up shops all over the world. read more

The most recent trend to reach this level of hype? Rock tees. June 6th is the date, and the boots you see above will be dropping, along with 4 different types of women’s heels.

Let’s start off with the boots. Last season’s 950 Boots were a success, as sneakerheads and fashionistas the world over took to the chunky, rugged silhouette. We’re of the opinion that Yeezy Season 2’s Military Crepe Boots (pictured above) will be just as big, if not a bigger success. Sure, the $645 retail price is steep, but has that ever stopped Kanye fans before? Plus, it’s a dope, slim, high-quality boot, with an all-suede upper and a crepe sole. It’s not as chunky as Yeezy Season 1’s boots, and is more acceptable for all-season wear. We’ve got a feeling these will be a massive hit. read more

VLONE Is Poised To Break Out In A Major Way

playboi-carti-vlone-thug-wavy-wednesday-asap-mob-0

You’ve probably already seen the shirts. A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti (above), and Virgil Abloh have all sported them. You’ve heard the music, Carti’s “Vlone Thug”. You might be wondering what VLONE is all about, or you may know already. Regardless, you need to know one thing: VLONE is poised to break out in a major way this summer/fall.

VLONE-Presentation4

Don’t know much about the brand? Fear not, here’s a quick backstory. Started by A$AP Bari, a founding member of A$AP Mob, VLONE is a cult fashion brand that produces tees and hoodies. Although the classic VLONE graphic is the most recognizable (they’ve even collaborated with Off-White on a limited shirt), they also offer other graphics like their “Friends” logo tees. Originally, VLONE was only available through pop-up shops and Bari himself (if you were lucky), but now their online store is open, and the brand is available to the masses. read more

It’s almost that time again. Two of the hottest brands in the world, Adidas and Palace have linked up for another season of collaborative goodness. The first images of their S/S 2016 collection hit the Internet earlier this week, and they couldn’t have come at a better time, with summer right around the corner, and a break in Adidas’s Yeezy releases. There’s a lot of fire pieces in the collection, but after careful deliberation we were able to narrow it down to our three favorites. Let’s stop talking and get right to the jawnz. read more

Anti Social Social Club: A Club Worth Joining?

Anti-Social-Social-Club

In today’s Internet age, new brands are very polarizing. They appear out of nowhere, and with the right backing and co-signs can become wildly popular in a matter of days. Most of these brands seem to be somewhat of a flash in the pan, but one that appears to have some staying power is Anti Social Social Club, founded by Neek Lurk of Stussy. With celebrity co-signs from Kanye West to Keith Ape, and releases that sell out almost instantly, they’ve become somewhat of a force…but opinions on them are widely divided. read more

Here at KicksOneTwo, we’re all about individuality. We firmly believe that being yourself and doing your own thing are very important. We believe that one way you can express your individuality is through your kicks and gear, and a great way to do just that is to try out a custom sneaker project a try.

“Wait a second” you may find yourself saying. “I can’t paint. I don’t know how to sew either. How am I supposed to make a custom?” Well thankfully, there are several simple things you can do to put your personal touch on something. We can’t all be custom wizards like our buddy MPLS Customs (do yourself a favor and hit that link if you haven’t seen his work..you’re in for a treat), but we can all try out a DIY project, and it can be something simple. read more

Is Apparel Reselling The New Shoe Reselling?

kanye-west-pablo-pop-up-2016-billboard-620

Resellers. If there’s something limited or desirable, they’ll grab it and flip it. They play off of desire and thirst, and wherever there’s money to be made, be it tickets, shoes, clothes or really anything, they’re with it.

Resellers are nothing new to the sneaker game. Ever since the demand has outweighed the supply for shoes, they’ve been making good cheddar on sneakerheads who are desperate to have whatever the latest hot jawn is. This goes for clothes too. If any brand releases a limited capsule collection or desirable collaboration, resellers will swoop in and try to make a quick flip. read more

The Great Debate: Bape Vs. Supreme

20140826-Supreme-or-Bape-Title

The clash of the titans. The battle of legends. The fight of juggernauts.

Bape vs. Supreme. The two most popular brands in street culture, one a high-end brand from Tokyo, the other a scrappy skate brand from New York City. Both rose from humble beginnings to become powerhouses. Both command an unreal amount of hype that other brands couldn’t muster up if they tried. Both have rabid (and sometimes overlapping) fanbases. They’ve even collaborated.

But which one would win if they went head to head? Who would come out on top in the battle of street culture titans? There’s only one way to find out: a three-round, head to head battle for the crown. Let’s get ready to rumble. read more

3 Shoes That Look Great Beat Up

footmaine

We all love a fresh, clean pair of kicks. There’s nothing quite like busting a brand new pair out of the box and feeling like a million bucks while you walk down the street. We’ll try our hardest to keep our kicks clean, and with perseverance and a little bit of good luck, we’re usually able to do just that.

However, it’s impossible to keep all your kicks clean all the time. Shit’s gonna happen, both literally and figuratively, and if you’re not careful you’ll probably step in it. No need to worry though. There are certain shoes that look great beat up. With wear, they gain more character and become more unique, and we’ve compiled some of those shoes into a handy list for you right here. However, trends catch on everywhere eventually, and there are a few that you’re bound to see around these parts sometime in 2016 (if you haven’t already). Here’s a short list of trends/brands that you’re bound to see in the Twin Cities this year.

Palace

Arguably the hottest brand of 2015, Palace is gradually making its way into MSP. There’s been a core group of Supreme lovers (especially in the Uptown area) for several years now, but over the last few months, there have been a few Palace sightings as well (I’m actually wearing a Palace shirt while typing this). Cultivate Your Personal Style

The clothes you wear and the style you aim for are far more important than you might think.

When it comes to style, having your own unique perspective is important. You want to portray a certain image when you dress, and whatever that image may be, you need to make sure you’re conveying it clearly. Want to get on your cozy boy steez with tailored sweats and a fire basic hoodie? Still love the street goth look? Rare Japanese garments your type of thing? Let’s get right to it..starting off with the good.

Good

As to be expected with any project Bape is involved it, the accessories were on point. The bags and small towels were both killer. The soccer jerseys and warmup jackets/pants were fire as well. You can never really go wrong with all-over Bape camo print, and they applied it tastefully on some of Puma’s most classic garments. We were granted a plus one, and my dad had expressed interested in going, so I decided to bring him along. He’s not the biggest Kanye fan, and he doesn’t like rap music at all, so I wasn’t sure what he would think, but I figured it would be interesting to get someone who wasn’t immersed in the culture’s thoughts on the show. read more

We’re sneaker guys. It’s in our blood. It’s what we do. There’s no part of an outfit that we love more than a crispy pair of kicks. We dress from the feet up each and every day, and we’re damn proud of it.

The only issue with this is that sometimes we love our kicks a little bit too much, and the rest of our outfit gets neglected. Thoughts On The Supreme S/S 2015 Collection

They’re back.

preme 1

After what feels like a long hiatus (even though it was just a few months), Supreme is back with their latest offering, the Spring/Summer 2015 collection. In classic Supreme fashion, there’s plenty of collabs, random yet tasteful accessories, and a wide variety of garments, from soccer goalie jerseys to a faux-fur coat. If you haven’t seen the lookbook yet, it’s available on Supreme’s home page as well as Hypebeast.

As a whole, I think Supreme did a very solid job with this collection. There are a few really solid graphic t-shirts (my two favorites are the “You’re not living until you’re living for Supreme” and the “Fuck You We Do What We Want” tees), the hoodies seem to be on point (if not somewhat safe), and on the headwear front there are a plethora of dope camp caps, snapbacks, beanies, bucket hats and the usual one fitted to chose from as well. read more
